A Girl’s Guide to Getting Your Man to Groom

“I liked it. It felt nice without making me feel like I was smearing lady products on my body.”

Oh the joys of introducing your man friends to grooming products. If you’ve ever tried to get your boyfriend, brother, father, coworker to ditch his Irish Spring, you know the drill: resistance, acquiescence, acceptance. As a veteran product-pusher, I have a few tips for making the process as smooth as possible:

1. Start with basics. Don’t leap into the eye creams and serums. Instead, gently encourage him to try things he’s already familiar with, like a nice bar soap. My guy-approved pick: Kiehl’s Ultimate Man Body Scrub Soap.

2. Go for function. Focus on products that you can feel (or see) working: a new shave cream, a tingly face wash, a softening shampoo. Try Ursa Major’s Fantastic Face Wash, a zesty all-natural lather that smells fresh and manly and will keep his skin clear.

3. Let him take credit. Once you’ve planted the grooming seed, you’ll be amazed at how your man will take it and run with it. Before you know it, he’ll be telling you all about the new brands he’s discovered. (Ok, maybe not quite but he’ll go ahead and purchase stuff on his own.) Latest find: Baxter of California Facial Scrub.
