Style Tips from AllPlaidOut’s Max Wastler: Guest Blogger
Max Wastler’s blog, AllPlaidout.com, has beautifully documented factory visits and heaps of classic style inspiration. You may not know that Wastler is also the curator of online retailer Buckshot Sonny’s, where he hips us to goods we never knew we wanted, but suddenly can’t live without — from fingerless gloves to pancake mix. Birchbox Man caught up with him for a couple minutes during a quick trip to New York for some grooming and style advice.

Q: You’re a Midwestern guy whose been dealing with the cold your whole life. Any style tips for winter?
A: When I was growing up, my parents made fun of me because I would always dress with too many layers. You can’t have enough collars. I layer like a crazy person.
Q: Seeing as you’re on a business trip right now, what can you tell me about your Dopp kit?
A: I stole it from my brother, who stole it from me. It’s a royal blue nylon case with yellow trim that we each individually took to summer camp. I know this because our mother wrote my name and my camp on it, and then scratched my name and camp out to fill Ben’s name in. It’s still in great condition.
Q: What’s your beard attack plan?
A: I still use the same razor I used in high school: the Gillette Mach 3, but I haven’t found a shaving cream I like.
Q: Tell us about the brand and online retailer you launched a couple years ago, Buckshot Sonny’s.
A: We’re aiming for the kind of sporting goods store your grandfather would have taken your father to. Truthfully, it’s just random stuff we find and really like. The kind of pieces you can’t find anywhere else.
Q: Okay, lightning round time. Favorite place to shop in your current home, Chicago?
A: Penelope’s. It’s literally a mom and pop shop.
Q: In your home town of St. Louis?
A: Winslow’s Home, a new general store in an old general store space.
Q: In New York?
A: Hickoree’s Floor Two in Brooklyn.
Q: Product you can’t live without?
A: I can’t have enough Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groome.
Q: Biggest grooming splurge?
A: Every year I buy a travel vial of Bois D’orage by Frédéric Malle. It’s about $95. Oh, and I should say that in 2008, while bored at work, I wear-tested several different sticks of deodorant alongside some coworkers, and found out that Burberry London deodorant worked best for me.
Q: Latest completely sweet Ebay find?
A: 1930s era L.L. Bean canvas duffel.
Q: You’re headed to South East Asia, oh man, it’s monsoon season! What one pair of shoes is coming with you?
A: Vintage Hunter wellies. The rubber holds up a lot better on the old boots than the junk that they’re using now, and they have a thicker tread.
Q: You’re headed to the Tibetan plateau for some alone time. What lip balm is coming with you?
A: Chapstick medicated.
Have a trip coming up? Our go-to shampoo and conditioner to pack are from C.O. Bigelow.
