Superbowl Preparedness: Can’t Screw it Up Chili

Photo: Serious Eats

We all know what you’re going to be doing on Sunday. But instead of just buying chips and dip and ordering pizza, put in a little extra effort. We’ve got a chili recipe for every level of cook, from can’t-boil-water to kitchen pro.

Level 1: Somewhat Homemade

There’s no shame in using pre-made chili. Our CFO, Mike, can grill with the best of them but says he always starts his chili with Wick Fowler’s Chili Kit. ”Pre-made chili takes a lot of the guess work out of the process, but you should still make it your own. I love using a good mix of beans, corn and diced green chilies over my base of ground beef or turkey.” Serve it over rice with cheddar cheese and sour cream. “It’s nearly impossible to screw it up,” he says.

Level 2: Mom’s Finest

Call your mom (or your grandmother). Ask her to walk you through her recipe. Alternatively, try this spicy chili con carne from our buddies at Bon Appetit. They know what they’re talking about.

Level 3: Ready for Big Leagues

If you know your way around the kitchen, go all out with Iron Chef Michael Symon’s Pork Cheek Chili. Loaded with pork cheeks, bacon, spices, black-eyed peas, beer, and much more, this is serious. It’ll take you all day, but it’s worth it.

Extra credit if you make Frito Chili Pie. Don’t forget to save some for me.
