What Do Your Socks Say About You?

Socks have been getting a bit of attention recently (thanks New York Times!), and I say it’s about time. I’ve been expressing myself through sock selection for years—or as Stan, the manager at Chotchkie’s, might say, through my pieces of flare. While I wouldn’t go so far as to say that the look gives you membership into an “in crowd,” as the Times is reporting, I do think socks say a lot about the man who wears them.
I started experimenting with colors and patterns when I was still on Wall Street, where fashion culture is dominated by grey slacks and blue button downs. It was always fun sitting in a room full of uptight dressers, crossing my legs to show a shock of hot pink or neon green, and watching the mixed reactions. What did it say about me? Probably that I was bored (which was entirely true). But really, it was my way of having a little fun in a corporate environment. My socks became a barometer of my mood. If I was feeling punchy, maybe bright colors with dots. Subdued? Perhaps a dark argyle. Jovial? Let’s go with stripes.
Fast forward a few years, and more men are making statements with their socks, wearing everything from basic white tubes to mismatched sets that look like they came from a clown institute. Sock culture has evolved into a platform to show off your style and a bit of your personality (without actually having to express any real emotions). Here are some thoughts on what your socks might say about you:
Dark, solid colors: You’re traditional, and perhaps a bit conservative; you might just be indifferent.
Bright, solid colors: You still err on the side of tradition, but you have a wild streak and take a risk every now and again.
Stripes: Someone’s happy; the brighter the stripes, the better you’re feeling.
Polka Dots: You’ve got something to say, and you want everyone to know it.
Animal Prints: I applaud your creativity.
So gentlemen, it’s time to express yourself. What do you have to say?

Stylish socks require special laundering. Keep those brights, stripes and dots bold with this detergent.
