Losing Sleep Causes You To Eat More: You’ve Got Male
Once a week, Birchbox’s resident Yoga and men’s product expert, Eric, will gives us girls some insight into his world in You’ve Got Male. Whether he’s giving his expertise on skincare (boys need advice, too!) or highlighting his new favorite grooming trend, this guy has got taste—so we’re lucky he’s on staff and willing to share.
Sitting at my desk this morning, rubbing my eyes and clutching my coffee mug, I read that recent studies show that losing sleep can actually make you fat. (Cue music indicating impeding doom!)
According to the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, lack of sleep can cause us to eat more and make poor food choices. Findings are based on a study where the brains of men were analyzed while being shown images of high-caloric foods and low-caloric foods. The image series were shown first after a good night of sleep and then after a completely sleepless night. After not sleeping, the men showed an 8% increase in the activation of the part of the brain associated with the desire to eat. Appetites were bigger after not sleeping. As if we didn’t have enough to worry about when we don’t sleep, we are at risk of grabbing potato chips when we otherwise might have chosen celery sticks! Knowing this will definitely make me reconsider what “enough” sleep is. In reality, we all know it’s hard to do, but we have got to get some more rest—even if only for the good of our waistlines.
Need some healthy snack ideas? We’ve got several suggestions.
